During the French Revolution, three men were arrested for conspiracy with monarchy and convicted for crimes against the people. They were sentenced to death by the guillotine. One was a priest, one was a farmer and one was a carpenter.
"Who will be first?" asked the executioner.
The priest stepped forward.
"Do you want to look up or look down?" asked the executioner.
The priest said, " I am not afraid - I will look death in the face." He placed his head on the block. The executioner pulled the lever. The blade fell halfway and stopped.
"This is an act of God," the executioner said, "You are free to go."
"Who will be next?" asked the executioner. The farmer stepped forward.
"Do you want to look up or look down?" The frightened farmer chose to look down, and placed his head on the block. The executioner pulled the trigger. Again, the blade fell halfway and stopped.
"This is an act of God," the executioner said to the farmer, "You are free to go."
Finally, the carpenter stepped forward. "Do you want to look up or look down?"
The brave carpenter said, " I am not afraid - I will look death in the face." He placed his head on the block and looked up at the blade. Just as the executioner was going to pull the lever, the carpenter shouted, "Stop, stop! I see what the problem is".
What a fool! This story relates as a warning against people who are compulsive-obsessive about telling others how to solve their problems. Most times, it backfires.
