CRUISE CAME CLOSE TO ROCKET FIRE

Close call ... the Rhapsody of the Seas cruiseliner.
Paul TooheyNews Corp Australia Network
EXCLUSIVE
Passengers, including Australians, who took a cruise earlier this year through Mediterranean trouble spots on Royal Caribbean’s “Rhapsody of the Seas”, were not told that rocket fire had come dangerously close to their ship.
“Rhapsody of the Seas” sailed from Dubai on May 17, entered the Suez Canal and then visited the Israeli port of Ashdod, on May 26, about 40km north of the strife-torn Gaza Strip.
As cruise ships continue to take passengers into contested Middle Eastern waters, Royal Caribbean confirmed the incident to News Corp Australia but claimed the ship, which carries 2000 passengers and 765 crew, was never in danger.
“In May 2015, ‘Rhapsody of the Seas’ was alongside in the port of Ashdod, Israel at the same time there was a sporadic rocket attack from Gaza,” the company said in a statement.
“In an abundance of caution, ‘Rhapsody of the Seas’ recalled all guests and proceeded to Haifa, which was their next port of call. At no time was the ship in the close vicinity of rocket fire.”
It appears passengers were unaware why they were recalled to the ship, given testimonials from Australians such as “Cheryl W”, from Perth, posted on the company’s website: “The cruise was wonderful and I have recommended it, and you, to all my friends!”
Royal Caribbean and others continue to visit Ashdod, even though the Department of Foreign Affairs has issued strong warnings “that Australians reconsider their need to travel to areas of Israel within five kilometres of the border with the Gaza Strip due to the threat of rocket attack.
“This includes the cities of Sderot, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Be’er Sheva.”
Miami-based personal injury lawyer Jim Walker, who blogs on the industry, said cruise companies were ignoring the high risk of terrorism, hijacking and war in the Mediterranean.
“I don’t think they should be there,” Mr Walker said. “They’re still selling these cruises and sailing into harm’s way. They’re in it for the business. On the websites you don’t see Royal Caribbean issuing any warnings about the places they’re going.
“No one is telling the passengers. They’re not warning them on their promotional literature. At best, they’re issuing warnings on the ship or putting a flyer under your door as you pull into port.
“They don’t err on the side of caution.”
Mr Walker said it was “ludicrous” that some cruise liners continued to schedule visits to Tunisia after 22 cruise passengers were slaughtered as they were being collected on cruise buses after visiting the Bardo Museum, in Tunis, in March.
“What happened in Tunis is a farce,” he said. “The cruise company claimed they had no idea. It’s ludicrous. The army has been fighting ISIS and al Qaeda over there.”

Royal Caribbean told News Corp that the safety and security of “guests and crew is our highest priority. Our global security team closely monitors all of our ships around the world and if it is deemed necessary, takes appropriate action to amend itineraries.”
This is despite the fact that a German cruise ship AIDAdiva was hit by rocket fragments as it left Ashdod in July, last year. The company said in a statement at the time that the ship was not targeted.
Mr Walker said he’d received an email from a passenger who sailed to Ashdod on Royal Caribbean’s “Explorer of the Seas” a little over a week ago.
“She said they were heading towards Ashdod, when the port of call was cancelled. She said the captain mentioned terrorism and that tourists had been murdered that day on shore.”
Mr Walker said the Celebrity cruise company had recently cancelled a stop in Istanbul because of terror concerns. He said some liners arriving in Istanbul “let passengers out at night time and go in without great fanfare”.
He described cruise liners as “soft targets” for pirates, terrorists and common criminals.

BIRD TIME STORY

Once upon a time, there was a Bird named Birdie who had lived all its life with Pigs since it was hatched. It walks around like pigs, drags its feet like pigs and displays almost all the characteristics of a pig. But one day, Birdie saw a Bird in the sky and was surprised to see that a Bird could fly. Curiously, he went to Piggy Gee and said “ I just saw a bird like me in the sky flying. How did he do it?” Sarcastically, Piggy Gee replied, “How did he do it? That is what birds do. They fly!” Puzzled, Birdie asked, “So why can’t I fly?” Sarcastically, Piggy Gee answered, “It’s because you are with us fat pigs. We lift our fat bodies with our legs, and it is called walking. We don’t fly and don’t care about flying. Besides, we like your company here. Trust me, there’s nothing up in the sky”. Birdie replied, “How would you know, since you have never been in the sky?” Piggy Gee made a smirk and walked away. Birdie decided he was going to look out for the Bird in the sky. One day, he found the Bird in the sky and called out to him. The bird came down and they exchanged pleasantries. “Teach me how to fly,” Birdie said. “Teach you how to fly? You are a Bird and flying comes naturally”, the Bird responded. “You don’t understand,” Birdie said, “ I have lived with Pigs all my life. And all I know how to do is walk. Just show me how to start”. “Ok”, the Bird said, “you’ll start by running, stretch your wings, look up and lift. Once you are able to get off the ground, you will be able to ascend to the different levels in the sky, flapping your wings as you soar. But you must work with the winds. Flying is easier when you work with the winds”. Concerned, Birdie asked, “what if the wind is not going my direction?” The Bird laughed and said, “There is a wind for the different sides of the sky; there is the east wind, west wind, north wind and the south wind. So where ever you are going, there is a wind to assist you”. Excited about the news, Birdie asked again, “pardon me please, but how do I come down from the sky?” “No problem friend, it is the same principle. But this time, with your wings stretched out and flapping, you have to look down and then let the wind assist you. You will get down”. Birdie thanked the Bird, and watched it fly away.
For six days Birdie practised flying, and every time he made a lift he would haggle back down almost immediately. Worried, he hoped to see his friend in the sky to tell him how impossible it had been for him to fly after making a lift. One day, luckily for him, his friend in the sky came looking for him. “howdy friend, have you flown yet?” Sadly Birdie answered, “Noooo! It’s been frustrating. Every time I lift, I come crashing down almost immediately. I believe the wind is too much for me, because every time I lift, the wind hits me, I lose balance and come crashing down. My piggy friend laughs at me”. With empathy the Bird responded, “You are wrong my friend. No amount of wind is too strong for Birds, so long as you work with the wind. And by the way, how many feet high do you go before crashing down?” “Em, I’m not so sure,” Birdie responded. “But I doubt it is more than two hundred feet. The thing is, you know I have never been up in the sky, so I guess that I get scared sometimes and lose balance”. “Well, you have nothing to fear,” the Bird responded, ‘Birds don’t die”. Surprised, Birdie responded, ‘really, Birds don’t die? Wow! You mean I am going to live forever?” “Of course,” the Bird replied, “Birds don’t die, no matter what height they fall from. We are immortal. So forget about dying. You cannot die or get hurt. We Birds are very unique. “Okay then,” he continued, “I will help you with a lift up five hundred feet, and then let you off. Then all you’ll have to do is, working with the wind, just follow me everywhere I go. There’s a beautiful place I am going to show you. We will have lots of fun”.
Excited, Birdie came right on top of his friend as agreed, and up they went. By the time they were five hundred feet high, Birdie’s friend told him it was time to get off his back, and fly on his own. Of course, that was the highest Birdie had been, he was already enjoying it and was eager to soar on his own. Gently, Birdie got off his friend and soared with the wind and followed his friend turn by turn. Finally they got to a resting place, and landed. “Wow”, Birdie exclaimed, “that was so much fun. I love flying. I can’t wait to go again. It is easier than I thought. And this is a beautiful place. Thank you so much friend”. Smiling sheepishly his friend responded, “I’m glad you loved your flight. I told you flying comes naturally with Birds. But one more thing I really, really, really need you to know. Birds, I mean all kinds of flying creepy birds like you and I, we die”. “What?” Birdie exclaimed, “I don’t get it. I thought you said Birds don’t die?” “Yes I did, the Bird replied, “ I only said it, because I realised that fear was the factor behind your inability to fly. So I figured that if I could make you believe that Birds don’t die, you would summon enough courage to do what you already have the ability to do. See what I mean?” In sobriety Birdie responded, “ you are right, my friend. I was too afraid to die or get hurt, and that was why I failed to fly all the time. Thank you for helping me”. “You are welcome, my friend”, the Bird responded, “ so now you can fly all you want and get to wherever you want to be”. “Very true”, Birdie agreed. “But I have to go back to my friend Piggy Gee, and say my final good bye to him”. So Birdie thanked his friend, and flew back to Piggy Gee.
“Where have you been?” Pigee Gee asked. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you”. With a sense of pride, Birdie responded, “I’ve been where Birds go, up in the sky”. Very upset, Piggy Gee blurted out, “I told you there was nothing up in the sky!” “Oh Piggy Gee”, Birdie responded, “don’t be upset. Indeed, there is not much in the sky. Birds don’t live in the sky. We fly in the sky to get to anywhere in the world. The sky is our road. And it’s a beautiful world out there”. Looking down sadly he continued, “Unfortunately, I can’t take you. But I hope that some day you will be able to go by the road meant for you to discover your world. I have to fly away now. There are lots of possibilities out there that I have to discover. I will miss you my friend, and I will never forget you”. “But how are you going to make a friend like me? We’ve come a long way, you know?” Piggy Gee asked. “I will attract my kind”, Birdie responded, “my exact kind”.
As Piggy Gee watched, Birdie started off running, spread his wings, took a lift and up in the air he went. Soaring in the sky, Birdie exhilarated with excitement as the thoughts of endless possibilities and a new life filled his heart and mind. “The world is under me”, he thought, “ and I will conquer my world”.
The moral of the story; if you are an employer, keep in mind that no one is useless. If you have a staff who is not productive in the position you have put them, it is either they have not received enough training for the job, or they are just not right for the job. Degrees are good, no doubt, but most people have degrees in the area they are not fit for. They were probably misguided about a choice of career, or chose a career path for its popularity or ease of access. Job interviews should amongst all else, focus on hobbies, because hobbies or personal interests are directly or indirectly interwoven with an individual’s professionalism. In other words, you can find out what an individual is good at by examining their hobbies.
If you are an employee, you need to avoid just wanting to be in the happening place. People make a place happen, and not the other way round. Discover what and where you are good at and train yourself to be better at it. Don’t try to be like somebody else or compete with anyone, and don’t make money the focus. Money comes with the harvest. The sky is wide enough for all the Birds in the world. There are millions of discoveries yet to be made, and your name is on one or more of them. How do I know? Well, you have a unique way of doing simple things like; talking, laughing, thinking, imagining etc. Besides, your desires are not exactly the same as anyone else in the world. Your ability to desire a thing needs to align with your creative ability, which in turn would lead to discoveries unique to you.

Great minds attract, so choose carefully who you partner with or work for. There is this general misconception that it is the unemployed who needs the employer. It is like saying it is the husband or needs the wife or the wife who needs the husband. The fact is, everyone needs someone, so much so that when there is no one around aside from us, we start talking to ourselves. We were created that way, to coexist, give and receive. Any relationship, professional or otherwise, will either take you up or bring you down. You cannot remain the same. Birdie was in the wrong company since birth and didn’t know better than what he was exposed to. Piggy Gee lived a fulfilled life as a pig, but brought Birdie down to his level, and Birdie was not even doing well as a pig. He was just existing! It is not enough to exist. Not everyone who exists lives. When you live, your giving and receiving is effectual in all ramifications. Birdie could have died without tapping into his potentials. A Bird with wings that could fly far and wide would have died in a pig’s pen attempting to no avail to live a life foreign to it. What tragedy that would have been, and some of us are already leading this tragic life without knowing it. If after one year on your job, and you are not better or more challenged than you used to be, then you might need to do a rethink. You need to know if it is you or the job. If it’s the job, you will know by the fact that no one is innovative or trying to change anything. They are complacent with where they are. They compare themselves with people not up to them, and get comfortable with their level of success. This group of people forget that when growth ceases, death is imminent. My advice, run! But what if it is you? If the pay cheque is fat, you are probably blinded by it, and cannot see how stunted in growth you have become. The sad thing is, one day you will no longer be needed. The hype about you will be over some day, no matter how good you are. And if all you have lived for is “thirty days make one month income”, you’ll be damned. No matter how comfortable you are, do not stay on a job that does not cultivate you.

Lastly, I want to deal as briefly and as precisely as I can with the issue of fear. Everyone in this world is plagued with the fear of something. In fact, ninety percent of the world’s disaster is as a result of fear. One country fears another would be mightier than it and then takes a provocative step that leads to war. People fear to fail, do nothing and then end up failing. People have hurt other people out of fear. Birdie failed repeatedly to fly because he feared dying. But when he was deceived into believing he could never die, fear was lifted off of him and he soared to his highest height ever.
The wording of a popular hymn says, “He that is down needs fear no fall”. In other words, if you do not care to live, you will not be afraid of dying. If you do not care to succeed, you will not be afraid to fail etc. So it is safe to say that fear comes naturally to those with aspirations. So being afraid is not the problem, but not being able to deal with it so that it does not stay and pose a hindrance to you is the problem. I am not so sure how I can teach anyone how to deal with fear, except by the example that I live by. I face my fears and ask what the worse can be? And I find that whichever way a situation turns for the worse, there is always a way out. Simply put, every problem has a solution so fear not!

WAITING ON GOD

In close connection with listening to God is the idea of “waiting on God.” People are hindered from receiving direction from God simply because they are not waiting around long enough to hear what He has to say. We are religiously praying instead of spiritually listening. Waiting to hear is part of the prayer discipline.
Numbers 9:6–9 (KJV)
6 And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day: 7 And those men said unto him, We are defiled by the dead body of a man: wherefore are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the Lord in his appointed season among the children of Israel? 8 And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you. 9 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
  • How often do we treat God like He is a drill sergeant?
    • We think “God the great drill sergeant in the sky has to instructed me to pray.”
    • And so, we drop down and give God 20 prayer push ups.
  • We jump up and leave that place of prayer without expecting God to answer us.
  • It’s almost like we are saying, “Hey, God, don’t bother me right now. I’m praying now, can’t you see?”
  • Can you imagine God waving His arms trying to get your attention saying “Son, I have the answer for you? I have the answer for you if you’ll just quit ‘praying’ and listen.”

Hearing from God Takes Time

You Can’t Rush It

  • You have to be willing to spend the time.
  • You have to be willing to wait.
  • People say “I don’t have time.”
  • Sit down and examine that thought “I don’t have time.”
  • Is that really true?
    • You’re praying to get an answer, right?
    • If you don’t receive the right answer you may continue to be in deep weeds, right?
    • Do you have time to be in deep weeds?
  • So, really you do have time to wait.
  • It’s all a discipline and a mindset.
  • You have the time for the things you think are important.

Little Devotional Times Produce Little

  • To produce, you have to sow.
  • It’s the law of sowing and reaping.
Galatians 6:7 (KJV)
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
  •  Short devotional times produce…
    • Depleted spiritual vigor,
    • Arrested spiritual progress,
    • Dried up spiritual foundation.
  • One writer even went on to say that it is a sure sign of backsliding.
  • Calmness, understanding, and strength are never the companions of hurry.

Do You Value Hearing From God?

  • Is hearing from God at the top of your bucket list?
  • Hearing from God can’t be crowded into morning rush hour nor crammed into the tired part of your day when your body is saying go to sleep.
  • Hurry up conversation does not produce the voice of the Lord speaking to you.
  • What you value you will give yourself to and make time for.

Waiting on God is Not a New Concept

  • Did you know there were people in O.T. Bible times that so valued waiting that they gave their children names that meant to “wait on God?”
  • Here are two Examples.
    • JAHLEEL (Jah’ lih ehl) Personal name meaning, “God shows Himself to be friendly” or “he waits for God.” A son of Zebulun and grandson of Jacob (Gen. 46:14) who became a clan leader in tribe of Zebulun (Num. 26:26).
    • HACALIAH (Hak uh li’ uh) Personal name meaning, “wait confidently on Yahweh.” Father of Nehemiah.
  • The children of Israel understood about waiting on God.
  • That’s all they did for 40 years in the wilderness.
  • The children of Israel were in a constant waiting mode in the wilderness.  They waited for the cloud or the pillar of fire to appear before they moved.
Numbers 9:21–22 (KJV)
21 And so it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed: whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed. 22 Or whether it were two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining thereon, the children of Israel abode in their tents, and journeyed not: but when it was taken up, they journeyed.
  • Israel did not move.
  • They waited until the cloud moved.
  • Waiting on God, then, is good Bible order.
Isaiah 28:16 (KJV)
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, A tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: He that believeth shall not make haste.
  • Whoever believes will wait on Him.
  • Did you know God plays hide and seek?
  • God hides himself.
Isaiah 45:15 (KJV)
15 Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.
  • God hides himself and we are instructed to seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
  • The rewards goes to the seeker.
  • He hides Himself from those who refuse to believe Him and reveals Himself to those who do.

Intimacy Requires Development

  • If you want to have an intimate relationship with God, you are going to have to develop the fine art of faith and patience.
  • Intimacy, where you are having a one on one conversation with God, requires you to develop faith and patience.
  • Great spiritual people were not born fully developed.
    • Even Jesus grew in wisdom and stature (Lk. 2:52).
  • The testimony of Enoch.
Genesis 5:21–24 (KJV)
21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
  • Notice the word “AFTER”. Enoch didn’t walk with God until after this child was born.
  • Enoch had a great spiritual lineage. His great, great, great, great grandfather was Adam.
  • That’s pretty good company.
  • From the life of Enoch we learn that development takes time.
    • Don’t be hard on yourself.

Four Benefits of Waiting on God

Strength

Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.
  • When you are praying, you are putting out but when you are waiting on God you are taking in.
    • Taking in translates to strength.
  • Waiting is not an exercise where nothing is taking place.
  • Waiting is not emptiness.
  • You can see where faith might get involved by waiting.
    • I’m not just waiting in nothingness.
    • I am waiting and expecting Him to talk to me.
  • If faith is involved in waiting, then you can readily see that development will happen if you exercise yourself in this area.
Did you know that in the O.T. “waiting” and “hope” are so intimately connected that one of the Hebrew words translated “hope” or yahal is also rendered “wait”?
  • Expectancy generates strength. The longer you wait in His presence the stronger you get.
  • Expectancy is hope.
  • Now if my motive for waiting on God is right, If I wait on Him because I love Him, you have no engaged the power triplets, faith, hope and love (1 Cor. 13:13).
Psalm 27:14 (KJV)
14 Wait on the Lord: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say, on the Lord.

Goodness

Lamentations 3:25–26 (KJV)
25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

Not Be Ashamed

Isaiah 49:23 (KJV)
23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, And their queens thy nursing mothers: They shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, And lick up the dust of thy feet; And thou shalt know that I am the Lord: For they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

Prepared Things

Isaiah 64:4 (KJV)
4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, Neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, What he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

A Listeners Prayer

  • God
    Grant me to be
    silent before you–
    that I may hear you;
    at rest in you–
    that you may work in me;
    open to you–
    that you may enter;
    empty before you–
    that you may fill me.
    Let me be still
And know you are my God.
    Amen.

Call to Action:

It is always more important to hear God than to give Him your ideas. One word from Him can alter your entire life’s path. Isaiah the prophet speaking by the Spirit said these words. “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21) - Emery Hovarth
